Emojis are not Emoticons

We all used to use the old fashion emoticons back then, but nowadays, everyone just thinks it easier (and cuter) to use emojis.  But what confuses us all is that emojis are not actually emoticons, they are not even upgraded emoticons.  Here's why...
Just so we are all clear, an emoticon is made up of simple keyboard keys. For example :) is a smiley face.

Emojis started way back in 1999.  They come from the Japanese word "emoj" (correct me if I'm wrong).  I'm pretty sure we all know what an emoji looks like but just to make sure, here is an example...

Fun fact: Statistically speaking, this is the most popular used emoji for some reason.  I personally like the one with the closed eyes and the open smile...

So you can obviously see that there is a BIG difference.  Don't worry though, I used to kind of think the same thing when I was younger, but now whenever someone text me an emoticon, I sit there for at least ten minutes thinking "What in the world is that!"
